Asthma in Children

Asthma in children is a growing condition and can cause many life long problems in their life. Many children that have asthma also have allergies which often can cause the child’s asthma to flare up.

Some children have allergies to just outdoor or airborne allergies while others will have food allergies. Some children can even have both in conjunction with each other and many children that have asthma also have skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Asthma in children can be life threatening if not treated or preventive measures are not taken. Asthma attacks can happen at any time and during an asthma attack it is difficult for the child to breath, coughing, wheezing and even loss of air.

A simple inhaler or vaporizer can open up the air passages for them to breath and stop the attack. Some symptoms that can be watched for prior to an asthma attack is severe wheezing, coughing with out stopping, chest pain, chest pressure, panic attack, anxiety attack, rapid breathing, and blue nails or lips. The most common asthma triggers for children are mold, dust mites, pollen, cockroaches, smoke from cigarettes and chemical irritants.

Many of these can be controlled by keeping a tidy home and clean with natural ingredients instead of harsh chemicals like bleach. Living in a home without carpet and tile or hardwood floors is best since carpet can retain many irritants, dust, and allergies from pets. Even shampooing carpets and vacuuming the carpets often is not enough. Changing the air filters in the home often can also decrease asthma attacks and triggers.

Keeping cotton pillows, and bedding is best for children with asthma. Less irritants will stay in the bedding. Feather bedding and pillows tend to hold more irritants and are harder to clean. Getting a dehumidifier and keeping it in the child’s bedroom will eliminate moisture which can help decrease asthma attacks at night and eliminate mold and moisture in the child’s bedroom. Having anti-histamines on hand at all times is necessary.

Taking some MSM or any anti-histamine will help eliminate asthma attacks and triggers when the child does go outdoors in case the pollen count is too high for the child. Educating your child at an early age in case you can not be there during an attack and recognizing what triggers asthma for the child can help eliminate attacks and possible even death.
